Jair Bolsonaro has been taken into custody after authorities determined he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under home confinement.

The former head of state was found guilty of orchestrating a government overthrow in the ninth month and handed more than 27 years in incarceration, but he was staying under confinement pending appeals.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Justice Moraes said the action to imprison the septuagenarian politician was a preventative measure after "new facts" came to light.

This included seeking to disable his ankle monitor and a invitation to a public vigil that could enable a potential flight.

Legal Document Reveals Flight Fears

In a document approving the detention, Justice Moraes said information from the unit overseeing his home detention suggested the ex-president's "intention to break the tracking monitor to secure accomplishment in his getaway".

This, it said, would be assisted by the chaos caused by the gathering called by his offspring.

His child, Flávio Bolsonaro, who works as a senator, called for a gathering of his followers near his father's house to take place on Saturday night.

Flávio Bolsonaro wrote on social media on last Friday: Do you plan to struggle for your country, or watch it all from your mobile device there on your settee? I urge you to battle with us."

He said the demonstration would be so backers could "pray for his physical condition and for the restoration of democratic rule in our land."

Diplomatic Refuge Fears

Part of Justice Moraes's decision was the potential of Bolsonaro's "relocation to embassies near the home, considering that the investigations revealed a history of planning to seek refuge through a diplomatic representation", a statement said.

The court filing underscores that the United States embassy in the capital, Brazil's capital, is located around 8 miles from Bolsonaro's home.

International Reactions

His judicial problems have provoked anger from fellow populist conservative American leader Trump, leading him to enact a half-rate duty on Brazilian product imports.

The former president is being kept in a federal law enforcement building in Brazil's capital city and will have a custody hearing on the following day.

Recent Legal Requests

It was only on last Friday that the former president's lawyers asked the Supreme Court to permit him to complete his entire prison term under house arrest, with tracking devices.

They also asked that he be allowed to exit his dwelling for medical care, saying he required frequent medical attention for respiratory ailments and other illnesses.

Context of Sentencing

Bolsonaro was found guilty of leading a plot aimed at retaining his authority after he was defeated in the 2022 election to his left-wing rival, Lula.

Top judicial officials said that he had knowledge of a plot which included plans to murder Lula and his vice-presidential running mate, his vice-presidential candidate, and to arrest and execute the presiding judge - the top judicial official who has been managing his judicial proceedings.

The conspiracy was thwarted because it didn't receive the support of the army and air force commanders. His successor was inaugurated without problem on 1 January 2023.

But a seven days after, on January 8th, numerous his backers stormed and vandalised official structures in the capital, the capital city.
