Guitar Hero at 20 – The Plastic Guitar That United the Gap Between Rock Fans

Marking 20 years after the legendary game hit the market across the Atlantic, giving everyday gamers the tools to feel like rock legends. Not literally, though you'd be hard-pressed convincing anyone who's nailed Free Bird’s lengthy guitar solo in front of a packed crowd of friends.

Created by the developers, the game gave players a plastic guitar peripheral to match on-screen cues moving along the screen synchronized to a song. Each riff corresponded to particular chords, creating the sensation of a genuine live show.

The studio previously experimented with rhythm games prior to teaming up with RedOctane, which was acquired by Activision during the mid-2000s. Collaboratively, they laid the groundwork for a surprising massively profitable franchise which made a significant impact for many of the artists featured, introducing classic bands to a new generation of younger players.

A former executive, ex-chief operating officer from the developer, recalls the initial budgetary hurdles of licensing the recordings – despite the fact initial releases primarily featured cover versions.

“We reproduced all the music because the dollar figure was so high,” he says. “Despite having the necessary permissions by themselves, it proved extremely difficult. We couldn’t get acts such as legendary groups – RedOctane had virtually no money, and we were fairly certain it would fail. However, when the game took off, and record sales airtime increased, all artists desired to participate.”

He continues: “One of the remarkable aspects was how many mothers and fathers reached out and thanked us for introducing their children to the songs they adored. It became an intergenerational thing.”

Classic Rock Finds a New Audience

Irish blues-rock band one featured act had Never Too Late on the 2008 game the popular installment. Guitarist the artist remembers the way the game revived classic rock to the forefront: “Guitar Hero provided a larger, younger audience. Generally such music was considered music that was past it, but then once it got included in the game young people discovered it, abruptly it became trendy. This validated it, eliminating the outdated label. It provided all our music a new life.”

At that time, the band's first record was still not available in the US, meaning the game was a key medium for exposure for the band as they went on a North American tour supporting the rock giants. “The roadies were playing Never Too Late during travel, and some of them recognized us from Guitar Hero,” he notes.

Rock’s Heavyweight Spin-offs and Lasting Influence

Rock’s biggest acts soon capitalised on the game's success, with Aerosmith, Metallica and Van Halen starring in dedicated spin-off titles centered around each band’s catalogue and associated lore, imagery and legendary status. For example, the Aerosmith edition, reportedly to have made the band more money compared to their records. It moved well over 500,000 units upon release, while demand for their songs rose significantly at a time when the music business faced decline.

The series continues to inspire quick-handed dedication among its fans. Recently, an online personality completed a remarkable feat featuring Through the Fire and Flames – an infamously tough anthem made popular by Guitar Hero – on Clone Hero, a no-cost alternative with almost identical mechanics but an array of personalization features. This track is challenging enough on the hardest setting, let alone played at double speed while hitting a single one of the thousands of cues. They stated requiring nine months to accomplish.

“The game offers a, fantasy thing. Just as with other games, it doesn't imply you ought to pick up a real gun and go to war,” notes musician Herman Li.

The band had already completed a profitable run when their hit appeared in the third game, but Li says it turned them into widely recognized. “I remember the record label informing us that our records were moving like crazy,” he says. “It exploded on the subsequent tour, and we were playing just before the headliners on the Mayhem festival.”

In fact, DragonForce’s exposure via the game proved so vast that it threatened to eclipsing everything else accomplishments. Last year, the track featured in promotional material for Despicable Me 4. “Previously I thought otherwise, but I’ve made peace with it,” Li says. “If you only hear one DragonForce song, that's fine – each person has their own musical journey and I'm pleased we played a role of people’s lives”.

Enduring Impact from the Plastic Guitar

The best promotion, whether it’s for automobiles, clothes or games, extends beyond mere transactions – it inspires a longing. Did Guitar Hero harness this? “Precisely what our team trying to create,” Dornbrook says. “That thrill of performing as a music icon in the spotlight. Since the beginning, the co-founders felt that there’s an instinctive urge to create songs, and their goal was to leverage innovation to allow people to participate”.

Most installments came out over a mere half-decade from 2005 to 2010, including spin-offs like the DJ version, including a turntable controller, and the band-focused game. Subsequently, the publisher’s interest on peripherals died down, aside from a brief comeback several years later.

Titles like Clone Hero and newer releases have kept the community active, and there’s set to be a new product from the founders in development. A new studio has begun production on its debut music game. The initial creators are both involved as special advisers. Are gamers ready to embrace another game following Guitar Hero?

“We thought such titles could be like Madden allowing annual releases,” he remarks. “With abundant fresh tracks it could remain evergreen, thus I remain optimistic. It's entirely possible why it can’t persist with new generations.”
